Maidens Joust Junction in Two Out Rally Feast in Area Round of Playoffs, 17-7

The Haskell Maidens were tenacious Friday against Junction at Jim Ned, in a one gamer in the Area Round of Playoffs. Haskell would have liked a 3 game series, but lost the toss to Junction who opted for a one game hopeful “upset” that was never realized. With the Maidens as the “home” team, both squads were scoreless in the 1st inning. At the bottom of the 2nd, Julia Fuentes his a CF double to crank up the Maiden machine. With two outs, the Maidens scored their first 3 runs as Jordan Garvin legged out an error, and Krysta Winegeart and Gabby Mendoza each singled with their first hits of the game. Both lead off seniors hit 3/5 for the game.

The third inning saw both teams score two runs on less than perfect defense bringing the score to Haskell 5, Junction 2. In the top of the 4th, Junction had their own two out rally, with bases loaded as pitcher Emily Vanckhoven came up to bat. With a 2-0 count, Vanckhoven smashed a triple to the fence rejuvenating her teammates as Junction took the lead 6, 5. Not for long. With two outs, the Maidens rallied for 8 more runs in the 4th with singles by Mendoza, Ryanna Rodriquez, a triple by Lolo Alexander, single by Winegeart, and double by Mendoza along with 3 walks sprinkled in. Vanckhoven was done in the circle. Junction was able to squeeze in a run in the 5th, but again, the Maidens answered with another “two out rally” with 2 runs scored off of Garvin’s double in the 5th. The game ended in the bottom of 6, with Kelsey Guzman’s walk-off single that scored Laura Fuentes who reached on an error. The Maidens combined for 13 hits, 7 walks and only 3 strikeouts early in the game. Six of their hits were with two strikes. An unprecedented 14 of their 17 runs were scored with two outs!!

Defensive highlights included Laura Fuentes going the distance on the rubber with 7 hits, 3 walks, 1 HP and 3 strikeouts. Right fielder Lolo Alexander connected with catcher Guzman to stop a scoring run in the 3rd, along with 2 baseman Maddey Williams throw to pitcher L Fuentes at 3rd to stop an advancing runner. Finally third baseman Ryanna Rodriquez executed a nice double play grounder at third and still threw the runner out at first. Rodriquez also went 3 for 4 at the plate.

The Maidens will advance to the Regional Quarter Final Round in a 3 game series with Petrolia, who defeated Mason 4-0, 2-1. This series is scheduled in Graham Thursday at 6pm and Friday at 4pm. There will be a gate fee charged for this series.
