Maidens take down Lady Lions.
The Haskell Maidens traveled to Albany last Friday night to take on the Lady Lions and finish up round one in District 8-2A play. Haskell outscored Albany 20-6 the first half and they went on to get the 41-30 district win. Haskell moves to 25-1 overall and 6-0 in district.
Haskell was led offensively by Senior Hollyn Hadaway with 13 points and Senior Ariel Martinez with 12 points. I have been so proud of Hollyn and Ariel this year. They have really stepped up their overall play and that is what our team needed this season. They are playing a big part in our success, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
Other scorers on the night were CEra Taylor with 8 points, Landry Hanson 5, and Taylor Mankse 3. Leading the team in assists was Hadaway with 3, Martinez 2, and Hanson 1.
The Maidens were (14-38) for 36% from the field, (5-16) for 31% from behind the 3 point arc, and (8-13) for 61% from the free-throw line. Offensively, I thought the girls did a pretty good job handling all the different kind of defenses that Albany was throwing at us. We have seen a lot of different regular defenses and combination of defenses the first round of district. The girls are doing a solid job playing through it and taking whatever the defense gives us, Eddleman said.
Haskell forced Albany to shoot 22% from the field. Defensively, I was really proud of the girls. They were locked in and focused. They did what needed to be done to make it tough on them trying to score the ball, Eddleman said.
The Maidens won the rebound battle over the Lady Lions by a close margin 26-23. Mankse had a team high 9 rebounds followed by C Taylor with 8, Hadaway 4, and Hanson 3. Leading the team in steals was Manske with 2, Martinez 1, and C Taylor 1.
Overall, I thought it was good district win on the road. Albany it much improved from last year. They have a lot of new players and we knew it might be a battle. I was proud of the girls for grinding it out and getting the win, Eddleman added.
Coach Burson and the JV Maidens defeated Albany JV 23-12. They move to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in district.
