Maidens take down Lady Buffs.
The Haskell Maidens hosted the Cross Plains Lady Buffs last Friday night in District 8-2A action. Haskell outscored Cross Plains 40-13 the first half and went on to get the dominating 73-15 win. Haskell moves to 26-1 overall and 7-0 in district.
The Maidens had four players in double figure scoring. Freshman Delaney Hanson had a game high 18 points, Senior CEra Taylor had 15 points, Junior Landry Hanson had 13 points, and Freshman Emma Roewe had 13 points. Other leading scorers for the game were Ryanna Rodriguez 8 points, Melody Martinez 4, and Tanna Manske 2. Leading the team in assists was Martinez 6, C Taylor 2, Everett 1, and D Hanson 1.
Haskell had a solid night shooting the ball. They were (20-29) 69% from 2FG, (5-16) 31% from 3FG, (25-45) 56% from FG, and (18-25) 72% from FT. Offensively, it is always nice to have a very balanced scoring attack and have a high percentage shooting the ball. That makes it really tough on the opponents defense. The girls did an awesome job reading the defense, sharing the ball, and knocking down shots, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
Cross Plains was (2-15) 13% from 2FG, (1-9) 11% from 3FG, (3-24) 13% from FG, and (8-11) 73% from FT. Haskell used pressure man to man defense to force Cross Plains into 26 turnovers. Leading the team in steals Roewe with 7, D Hanson 4, Rodriguez 3, C Taylor 2, L Hanson 1, and Martinez 1.
The Maidens out rebounded the Lady Buffs 31-13. C Taylor had a team high 12 rebounds followed by Roewe with 6, D Hanson 5, L Hanson 3, and Martinez 2.
Overall, I thought the girls played at a high level and once again we had a lot of kids step up on both ends of the floor. It was a fun night from start to finish and our team really needed that. We are looking forward to our upcoming games this week against Stamford and Roscoe, Eddleman said.
On Friday afternoon, Coach Simmons and the JV Maidens defeated the Lady Buffs 21-18. They move to 15-7 overall and 5-2 in district. I was very proud of the JV Maidens this week against Hawley and Cross Plains. They had a lot of kids step up in absence of Tanna Manske and they found a way to win both games. I think that says a lot about the kids character and the job that Coach Simmons did, Eddleman added.
Friday, February 1st will be Senior Night and the last home game for the 4th ranked 2A Haskell Maidens. The Varsity will be going for their 43rd win in a row at home and their 3rd undefeated season in a row at home. JV will tip off at 4:00 and Varsity at 6:30. Please come out and support all these ladies one last time this season at the Tee Pee.
