Maidens take down the Lady Pirates.
The 8th ranked (2A) Haskell Maidens took on the 15th ranked (1A) Eula Lady Pirates last Tuesday night at Eula. Haskell jumped out to a 23-8 first quarter lead and went on to win the game 60-51. The Maidens move to 10-0 on the season and remain undefeated.
The Maidens were led by Junior Taylor Manske who finished with a season high 23 points and 15 rebounds. Haskell had a well balanced scoring attack. Landry Hanson had 18 points, CEra Taylor 11, Ariel Martinez 3, Ryanna Rodriguez 3, and Hollyn Hadaway 2. Leading the team in assists was Martinez with 5, Hanson 3, Hadaway 2, and Manske 2.
Haskell was (21-51) for 41% from the field, (5-21) for 23% from behind the 3 point arc, and (13-17) for 76% from the free-throw line. Offensively, I thought we shot the ball well and we had a well balanced scoring attack. We had three players in double figure scoring and that is tough to defend at our level, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
The Maidens allowed the Lady Pirates to shoot 32% from the field. Defensively, we did a solid job keeping the ball out of the paint and that is our main goal on the defensive end. Eula hit some tough three point shots that were contested and I give them credit for doing that, Eddleman said.
Haskell won the rebound battle 36-16. Mankse finished with 15 boards followed by C Taylor with 7, Bevel 4, Hadaway 4, and Rodriguez 3. Leading the team in steals was Hadaway, Hanson, Mankse, and Rodriguez with 1 each.
Overall, I was a little disappointed that we had two starters foul out and that we gave up 51 points. It is going to so important that we avoid foul trouble this year and keep our opponents below 40 points. That being said, anytime you can beat a strong girls basketball program like Eula, it is a very good non-district win, Eddleman added.
Coach Burson and the JV Maidens lost at close one to Eula last Tuesday afternoon to fall to 7-3 on the season. Coach Eddleman, Coach Martinez, and the JR High Maidens hosted the Roscoe Plowgirls last Monday afternoon. The Mix B Team won big 21-4, the 7th A Team won big 29-5, and the 8th A Team won big as well 64-2.
