Maidens win Regional Quarterfinal Championship.
The 13th ranked 8-2A Haskell Maidens (33-1) made the drive over to Colorado City last Tuesday night to take on the 7-2A Forsan Lady Buffs (25-5) for the Regional Quarterfinal Championship. Haskell outscored Forsan 26-17 the second half to secure the 40-26 playoff win and advance to the Regional Tournament for the first time since 1992.
Haskell was led offensively by Junior Taylor Manske who finished with 15 points and Sophomore Landry Hanson who finished with 11 points. Other leading scorers on the night were Hollyn Hadaway with 6, CEra Taylor 6, and Ariel Martinez 2. Leading the team in assists was Hadaway with 2, Hanson 2, Manske 2, and Martinez 2.
The Maidens were (15-38) for 39% from the field, (2-16) for 12% from behind the 3 point arc, and (8-14) for 57% from the free-throw line. Offensively, I thought we did a great job keeping our turnovers down and I thought we had a well balanced scoring attack, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
Forsan was (8-41) for 19% from the field, (3-16) for 18% from behind the 3 point arc, and (7-17) for 41% from the free-throw line. Defensively, I thought the girls showed a lot of intelligence, determination, and discipline throughout the entire game. They did an excellent job taking away their offensive strengths and they did it as a collective unit. It was awesome to watch and I was very proud of them, Eddleman said.
Haskell won the rebound battle over the much taller Forsan team 37-20. C Taylor led the way with 12 rebounds followed by Hadaway with 9, Manske 8, Hanson 5, and Martinez 3. Leading the team in steals was Manske and Martinez with 1 each. Hanson and C Taylor had 1 block each.
Overall, I thought the biggest deciding factors in the game were our rebounding and defense. Everyone knows that rebounding and defense win championships. I definitely feel that was proven true once more against a very tall and tough Forsan team. I was very proud of the girls on both ends of the floor and we are extremely excited to about reaching the Regional Tournament for the first time in 26 years, Eddleman added.
