Maidens tame the Lady Bearcats.
The Haskell Maidens hosted the Hawley Lady Bearcats last Tuesday night to start round two of District 8-2A play. Haskell outscored Hawley 31-9 the second half to get the 54-19 win. Haskell moves to 25-1 overall and remains undefeated in district at 6-0.
The Maidens were led offensively by Freshman Melody Martinez who finished with 15 points and Freshman Delaney Hanson who finished with 11 points. Other leading scorers were Calie Everett with 7 points, Emma Roewe 7, CEra Taylor 7, Ryanna Rodriguez 5, and Landry Hanson 2. Leading the team in assists was D Hanson with 2, L Hanson 2, and Martinez 1.
Haskell was (9-18) 50% from 2FG, (9-22) 41% from 3FG, (18-40) 45% from FG, and (9-16) 56% from FT. Offensively, I thought we started off slow and our rhythm was a little off the first half. I knew there was a possibility of that happening since we had changes to our starting line- up, changes to our team, and changes to player positions. But, the girls figured things out pretty fast and played much better the second half, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
Hawley was (3-22) 14% from 2FG, (2-10) 20% from 3FG, (5-32) 16% from FG, and (7-14) 50% from FT. Haskell forced Hawley into 12 turnovers. Leading the team in steals was D Hanson with 3, Martinez 2, L Hanson 1, and Roewe 1. Defensively, I thought the girls played really well. They were able to hold their best player to no field goals and they held their team to only 19 points. I was very proud of their effort and execution on that end of the floor, Eddleman said.
The Maidens out rebounded the Lady Bearcats 37-16. Leading the team in rebounds was D Hanson with 9, C Taylor 8, Martinez 6, Roewe 5, and Tanna Manske 3.
Overall, I thought we played pretty well on both ends of the floor. We had a lot of girls step up in the absence of Taylor Manske and that is what I was hoping for, Eddleman added.
On Tuesday afternoon, Coach Simmons and the JV Maidens defeated the Lady Bearcats 38-24. On Monday afternoon, the JR High Maidens traveled to Hawley to take on the Lady Bearcats. Coach Martinez and the Mix B Team won 15-3. Coach Martinez and the 7th A Team won 40-21. Coach Eddleman and the 8th A Team lost 37-12.
