Maidens Win District Opener.
The Haskell Maidens opened up district play on the road against the Hawley Lady Bearcats last Friday night in district 8 2A action. The Maidens won the first half 36-4 and continued to dominate the second half to get to get the 68-20 victory. Haskell moves to 20-1 overall and 1-0 in district.
Haskell had four players in double figure scoring. Senior Taylor Manske had 12 points, Senior CEra Taylor 12, Freshman Delaney Hanson 11, and Senior Ryanna Rodriguez 10. Other leading scorers on the night were Landry Hanson with 8 points, Calie Everett 6, Melody Martinez 5, and Emma Roewe 4. Leading the team in assists was Taylor with 6, Calie 3, and Landry 3.
Haskell was (17-35) 49% from 2FG, (8-25) 32% from 3FG, (25-60) 42% from FG, and (10-10) 100% from FT. Offensively, I thought the girls did a great job executing everything and reading the defense. We had well balanced scoring attack which led to everyone scoring and that is very tough to defend, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
Hawley was (4-21) 19% from 2FG, (2-8) 25% from 3FG, (6-29) 21% from FG, and (6-14) 43% from FT. Defensively, I thought the girls played very well. They did a nice job talking and taking away their offensive strengths. It felt like we contested all of their shots and that is exactly what you want to do, Eddleman said. The Maidens defense forced the Lady Bearcats into 18 turnovers. Taylor had a team high 3 steals followed by Ryanna with 2, CEra 1, Landry 1, and Melody 1.
Haskell dominated the rebound battle 41-16. Leading the team in rebounds was Taylor with 10 followed by CEra with 9, Delaney 6, Emma 6, and Ryanna 4. Overall, I thought we played extremely well on both ends of the floor. The girls prepared hard for their district opener against Hawley and their hard work paid off. It was a great way to start off district play, Eddleman added.
Coach Simmons and the JV Maidens lost their district opener in overtime 30-28. They will look to bounce back on Tuesday at Cross Plains starting at 4:00 PM.
