Maiden shoot down Lady Lions to Win Bi-District Championship.
The 8-2A Haskell Maidens (31-1) traveled to Bronte last Tuesday night to take on the 7-2A Ozona Lady Lions (22-11) to officially kickoff the much anticipated 2018 playoffs. The Maidens outscored the Lady Eagles 40-9 the second half to get the 77-27 win and take the Bi-District Championship. The 13th ranked Maidens won their eighteenth game in a row and they improved their overall record to 32-1.
Haskell had an amazing night shooting the ball and they were one point away from having all five starters in double figuring scoring. Junior Taylor Manske led the way with 20 points followed by Sophomore Landry Hanson with 16, Junior CEra Taylor 14, Senior Hollyn Hadaway 11, and Senior Ariel Martinez 9. Other leading scorers were Calie Everett with 3, Braelyn Bevel 2, and Ryanna Rodriguez 2. Leading the team in assists was Hadaway with 4, Manske 4, Martinez 4, Hanson 3, and C Taylor 2.
The Maidens shot (28-42) for 66% from the field, (8-19) for 42% from behind the 3 point arc, and (13-17) for 76% from the free-throw line. Offensively, I was really proud of how the girls shot the ball. I have never had a team shoot that well from the field in my 17 year career. It was awesome to watch and be a part of, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
The Lady Lions shot (8-45) for 18% from the field, (3-25) for 12% from behind the 3 point arc, and (8-12) for 66% from the free-throw line. Defensively, I thought the girls were locked in mentally all night long and they did an awesome job. They made it really tough on them and they held their best player to only 4 points, Eddleman said.
Haskell won the rebound battle over Ozona 28-13. Leading the team in rebounds was Hadaway with 7, Manske 7, C Taylor 7, Everett 3, and Hanson 3. Leading the team in steals was Hadaway, Hanson, and Rodriguez with 2 each.
Overall, I thought we played at a very high level on both ends of the floor. We shot the ball extremely well and we defended well. It was a great way to start post season play and hopefully we can build on it moving forward, Eddleman added.
