Maidens roll past Lady Lions.
The 4th ranked Haskell Maidens made a short trip last Tuesday night to take on the 19th ranked 1A Roby Lady Lions in non-district action. Haskell outscored Roby 33-16 the first half and continued to dominate the second half to get the 70-37 win on the road. Haskell moves to 14-1 on the season.
The Maidens were led offensively by Senior CEra Taylor who finished with 21 points and Junior Landry Hanson who finished with 20 points. Other leading scorers on the night were Ryanna Rodriguez with 10 points, Taylor Manske 8, Emma Roewe 6, Delaney Hanson 3, and Melody Martinez 2. Haskell had a total of 19 assists. Delaney had a team high 6 assists followed by Taylor with 4, Melody 3, Calie 2, and Ryanna 2.
Haskell shot (23-39) 59% from 2FG, (6-21) 29% from 3FG, (29-60) 48% FG, and (6-8) 75% from FT. Offensively, I thought the girls did a great job reading the defense and passing the ball which led to 19 assists. Basketball is a beautiful game to watch when it is played unselfishly. The girls play well together and compliment each others strengths, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
The Maidens forced the Lady Lions to shoot (11-48) 23% from the field and forced them into 19 turnovers. Defensively, I thought the girls played some tough defense on the road and that is what you want. They understand that defense travels and that they can always count on it on the road, Eddleman said. Leading the team in steals was Emma with 3, Melody 3, CEra 2, and Delaney 2.
Haskell won the rebound battle over Roby 41-31. CEra had a team high 9 rebounds followed by Delaney with 6, Emma 6, and Taylor 6. We gave up 13 offensive rebounds to Roby and that is something that just can not happen. We must do a better job of rebounding and finishing each defensive possession, Eddleman added.
On Tuesday, the JV Maidens and Coach Simmons did not have a game. The Roby JV Team did not have enough players. On Monday, the JR High Maidens played at home. The Mix B Team and Coach Martinez defeated Hamlin 20-15. The 7th A Team and Coach Martinez defeated Munday 40-1. The 8th A Team and Coach Eddleman defeated Munday 32-10.
