Maidens too much for Lady Bulldogs.
The 4th ranked Haskell Maidens hosted the Stamford Lady Bulldogs last Friday night in District 8-2A play in front of a packed house at the Tee Pee. Haskell outscored Stamford 34-16 the second half to get the 48-23 win. Haskell moves to 22-1 overall and 3-0 in district.
The Maidens were led offensively by Freshman Melody Martinez who finished with a game high 14 points and Senior CEra Taylor who finished with 13 points. Delaney Hanson had 7 points followed by Taylor Manske with 6, Landry 4, Emma 2, and Ryanna 2. Leading the team in assists was CEra with 4, Calie 1, Landry 1, and Ryanna 1.
Haskell was (14-24) 58% from 2FG, (2-12) 17% from 3FG, (16-36) 44% from FG, and (14-22) 64% from FT. Offensively, I thought we got off to a slow start. We had too many turnovers and we did not shoot well from the outside early in the game. Once we calm down a little bit, the girls did great job scoring from the inside and from the free-throw line, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
Stamford was (10-33) 33% from 2FG, (0-6) 0% from 3FG, (10-36) 28% from FG, and (3-7) 43% from FT. Haskell forced Stamford into 21 turnovers for the game. Leading the team in steals was Delaney with 4, Melody 4, CEra 2, Taylor 2, and Landry 1. Defensively, the girls did a solid job and that was probably the biggest deciding factor in the game. I thought we did an excellent job contesting their shots and blocking them out, Eddleman said.
The Maidens out rebounded the Lady Bulldogs 31-19. Leading the team in rebounds was CEra with 7, Delaney 7, Emma 5, Landry 5, and Taylor 3.
Overall, we definitely did not play our best offensively, but we made up for it defensively. The girls did a great job grinding it out and getting the win. We have played in a few of those games this year and I felt like that experience paid off, Eddleman added.
On Friday afternoon, Coach Simmons and the JV Maidens fell to the Stamford Lady Bulldogs 31-18. On Monday afternoon, the JR High Maidens hosted the Roscoe Plowgirls. Coach Martinez and the Mix B Maidens won 15-9. Coach Martinez and the 7th A Maidens won 31-17. And, Coach Eddleman and the 8th A Maidens won in overtime 34-33.
