Maidens take down Lady Indians.
It was much anticipated non-district game between the 7th ranked 2A Haskell Maidens and the always tough 14th ranked 1A Lipan Lady Indians last Tuesday night at the Tee Pee. Haskell raced out to a 29-1 lead to start the game and never looked backed to get the 54-24 win. Haskell moves to 3-0 on the season.
The Maidens were led by Senior CEra Taylor who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds to get the double-double and Freshman Delaney Hanson who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to get her first career double-double.
Other leading scorers on the night were Taylor Manske with 9 points, Melody Martinez 8, Landry Hanson 6, Emma Roewe 4, and Calie Everett 3. Leading the team in assists was D Hanson with 4, Manske 3, and Martinez 2.
Haskell shot (12-33) 36% from 2FG, (7-20) 35% from 3FG, and (8-17) 47% from FT. Offensively, I really liked how unselfish the girls played. They can all shoot the ball well, but they have shown the willingness to pass up good shots for great shots during our first three games of the year and that is fun to watch, head coach Blake Eddleman said.
The Maidens forced the Lady Indians to shoot 24% from the field and caused them to make 17 turnovers. Defensively, the girls could not have played any better the first half. They were locked in and energized by our crowd. I thought our student body and fans played a big role in the outcome of the first half, Eddleman added. Leading the team in steals was C Taylor with 4, Manske 2, D Hanson 1, L Hanson 1, and Roewe 1.
Haskell won the rebound battle over Lipan 46-17. C Taylor had a team high 11 rebounds followed by Manske with 10, D Hanson 10, Martinez 6, and L Hanson 4. Overall, I thought we played great offensively and defensively against a well coached Lipan team. Amber Branson is one of the best coaches around and her resume speaks for itself. She is an awesome lady and coach, Eddleman said.
The JV Maidens and Coach Simmon had a great week. On Tuesday, they beat Lipan 25-16. On Thursday, they beat Lubbock Roosevelt 32-31 in a barn burner in pool play at the Spur JV Girls Basketball Tournament and went on to beat Tahoka 43-20 later that day in pool play as well. On Friday morning, they lost to Slaton 37-31 in the Championship game. Congratulations to all of you on a job well done!
The JR High Maidens opened up their 2018-2019 season on the road at Roscoe last Monday night. The Mix B Team won 10-7, 7th A Team won big 33-2, and the 8th A Team lost 30-23.
